As the late summer sun slowly began to cast its warm glow over my final days of vacation, we decided to explore a place that had long been on our radar but never really caught our attention. We had passed the harbor in previous summers Landskrona on the way to Fri, but this time we stopped to discover what the city had to offer. The weather was better than the weather apps could have predicted, and the city's outdoor cafes were filled with people who wisely chose to enjoy a late holiday. Simply a nice day to stroll along the streets and enjoy a lovely lunch in the sun.
We definitely didn't explore the whole city and all its museums and sights, but were just looking for some nice relaxation to keep the holiday feeling right down to the tiles. Unforced and unplanned. Three simple pleasures.
1. The Erikstorp neighborhood
On the way into Landskrona is The neighborhood of Erikstorp, a creative restaurant block located right by the award-winning golf course. Here food is served all day at the various restaurants, some only open in the evening while others deliver from lunch to brunch to dinner. We had actually hoped to be able to taste the pizza at the Trattoria, but it didn't open until 16pm. So it was a lovely homely lunch at the outdoor dining area at the Brasserie with a view of the last hole on the golf course.
The dish of the day this day was fried fish with fresh potatoes and remoulade sauce in a perfect portion. Very well prepared and tasty. The hamburger served was rated 9 out of 10 by the accompanying hamburger experts. A place to remember if you pass by Landskrona!
2. Landskrona Citadel
The rose-red citadel is shaped like a star between sea and city in the center Landskrona. The citadel was already built in the middle of the 16th century by Christian III of Denmark to be a strategic center in Öresund. During this time, Skåne was Danish and the Danish king controlled the entire Öresund trade traffic with this building.
During its heyday, the citadel was heavily fortified and the high outer walls and walls were protected by two wide and water-filled moats and a drawbridge. A solid building that has withstood the test of time and the troubled times that have passed in the area.
During the 18th century, the citadel was converted into a prison, and then during the 20th century it also served as a forced labor facility. Today, the citadel is a creative place with numerous shops, artists and concerts. This is also where the charm lies Patisserie Citadelet which serves cakes and lunches throughout the year.
Today is Landskrona citadel The best-preserved castle in the Nordics from the 16th century, surrounded by an area that is nice for an afternoon stroll. The citadel was not open to visitors when we were there and unfortunately there does not seem to be any possibility of guided tours either.
3. Cap Stock & Barrel
When it started to feel too sweaty to walk around the citadel, we found a little oasis on the beach just below the castle. Cap Stock & Barrel is a seasonal bar/restaurant/beach club located on a fine-grained sandy beach with views of Denmark and Landskronas water tower.
With a lot of Balinese feel and with a lot of sand in the shoes, this was a perfect place to settle down under a parasol with a slush and an ice-cold non-alcoholic beer. The music pumped Miss Li through the speakers on repeat in preparation for her concert at the Citadel that evening, and many visitors, dressed lightly, took the opportunity to improve their tan in one of the many sun loungers or beanbags.
On one side of the beach is the Atlantic Wall with its rows of cement blocks, a historical reminder of World War II built to prevent a German invasion. Something that few visitors seem to give any thought to as they slowly wade out into the shallow water.
We had managed to squeeze in the penultimate day of the year that Lock Stock & Barrel was open for this year, which felt like an unexpectedly early end to the season. But it is a challenge with opening hours outside of industrial holiday times and even if north-eastern Scania is teeming with German, Dutch and Danish tourists during these weeks, they probably won't find it here.
We leave Landskrona with a walk in the harbor in the marina. The pool at Hotell Öresund Conference and Spa hangs from the facade with its transparent walls and there are more bathers posing in front of their mobile phones than those bathing. A fishing boat has just docked at the dock and is unloading the day's catch into large white styrofoam boxes. Landskrona has more than three pleasures and sights to experience, but we'll have to deal with that another day.
